So, here it is… the first few days into Summer and it’s so hot outside I was sure I was getting pretty close to the Gates of Hell (or the US Congress, take your pick). This obviously called for a retreat into the air-conditioned office in order to take a short breather and cool down a bit. And since it’s a slow afternoon, I thought I’d take a run through my typical reading list of Conservative Websites (American Thinker, Big Hollywood, RightBias, Pajamas Media, The Heritage Foundation and so forth). Yes, I am one-sided in this fight…

Alas and alack, it’s the same ol, same ol out there. Gangs of Terrorists Doing Drive-by Shootings, Growing Economic Turmoil, Political Scandal, Constant Noise from the Leftist Media and Incessant Attacks against Western Society… And that’s just the Kansas City news!

There are about twenty pages of commentary that could be done on everything from the recent vote-scandal in Iran, to the illegal firings of Inspectors General who root out corruption that can be directly linked to His Omnipotence, to the obvious ever-increasing train wreck rush to Socialism. But this commentary will be brief and limited to one thing and one thing only…

Every nation of any consequence or conscience has a day which is set aside to recognize the fallen men and women of its Armed Services. Memorial Day (the last Monday of the month of May) in the United States of America is our day which we set aside for this act of remembrance.

Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day and was enacted after the Civil War by a General Order # 11 from the Grand Army of the Potomac. For me, one line stands out in this document and should be carefully considered by all citizens of this country, whether they served in the Armed Forces or not.

Let no neglect, no ravages of time, testify to the present or to the coming generations that we have forgotten as a people the cost of a free and undivided republic.

Years back, I was at the American Cemetery at Normandy on Memorial Day. I saw a fair number of people there who were attending ceremonies, some of a personal nature and others led by Veterans groups. But I also saw a number of people there who were native French wearing their medals and berets with Regimental patches. After speaking with a number of them, I found that they had been involved in the battles that eventually led to the freeing of their country from the Nazi Occupation. Not a single one of these men and women had anything but the greatest of thank-yous for the Americans who died to give them their freedom back.

Memorial Day still means something to many in this nation. Service to country still means something to many in this nation. And a FREE and undivided Republic still means something to many, many of us in this nation. Although Memorial Day is often considered to be the unofficial “start of Summer”, it might do to take a few moments to remember those who died to insure we have the freedom to enjoy that leisure… and remind our government representatives and leaders of that, too.

WE THE PEOPLE got your e-mail about your upcoming visit to Sedalia next week and WE are impressed that even though you don’t know us personally, you took the time to make sure WE got the invite.

There are however a couple of problems with the timing of your visit. First, with the President working so hard to pass the Cap & Trade bill by Memorial Day WE would think you’d want to make the visit before this crucial vote so that you can gauge the feelings of your constituents, WE THE PEOPLE. The second issue WE have with your visit is the time: 9:30-10:30am? Sedalia and the surrounding areas are working class communities and many families have 2 working parents. In other words, the majority of the people that need to hear what you have to say and give you their input will be at work.
