Everyone has their good points. Even the most hardened criminal loves his mother. Even my first wife got it right once in a while. Ok, maybe just once. 30 years ago she said that if America as a nation didn’t change its evil ways (paraphrased–she used more explicit religious terms) we would lose our freedom and Russia would gain theirs. On this historic election night, as Americans make a choice between corrupt capitalism and corrupt socialism, I had the privilege of dining and talking with a group of Russians who came here to observe our elections. As the discussion progressed I found out that they are no longer scared of the KGB, that they have freedom of speech and that their economy, while still far short of a dynamo powerhouse, is definitely growing and more individuals are prospering and enjoying the fruits of their own labor. As I write this it appears that the collective “we” has just elected a president whose intent is to remove our freedom of speech and our ability to pursue happiness as we see fit. In the coming weeks we can expect both houses of congress to begin drafting legislation that will initially raise taxes on those who create jobs in America, ultimately resulting in job loss, higher prices and economic recession if not depression. As an added benefit, those bills will also be laden with pork. For those of us conservatives who really love America and believe in personal achievement and personal responsibility, I guess we will just have to hide and wait and hope that the country doesn’t get permanently screwed up while we ride out this storm.
Four years from now I sincerely hope I won’t hear “I’ll never vote for a black man for President again. Look what he did to the country.” My friends, it’s not his blackness that will be at fault, it will be his socialism and his ignorance and ineptness at business and economics, foreign policy and military strategy.
I wish the Russian people well on their journey to economic growth and social freedom as we begin to lose ours.
My first wife? The grand irony is that I’d bet she’s somewhere in California voting for the change she predicted.
As for the title of this site, I guess “we” truly are that stupid. I just wonder how long before American’s get buyer’s remorse.
