Back on August 12th I posted a missive outlining how to fix the health insurance problem in the U.S. I even managed the following day to get CNN to video tape it, however they refused to air it because it made too much sense and it would have made any thoughtful journalist begin to ask pointed questions. One of the aspects I didn’t delve into was the uproar over the American people’s response to their legislators at the town hall meetings. I knew that Obama had dispatched his union buddies to try to incite fights and make it appear as the townspeople were being totally unruly. At any rate, the one question I couldn’t answer was why the unions would support this health care plan that would require them to give up the stellar benefits they currently enjoy for the poorer quality of a government run program. In my mind I postulated that, in the final version of the bill, we would find wording that allowed union members to opt out of Obamacare and maintain their own health insurance benefits. The reason for this would of course be to keep the union in Obama’s pocket, and secondly to encourage growth of those unions. How many industries would unionize just to get better health care?
It turns out I was right. Ed Morrissey wrote a piece in the Hot Air blog on August 29th asking the same questions I asked and he pretty much confirmed what I thought. The unions will have the same ability to opt out of Obamacare that our legislators will have. Maybe the next question to ask at the town hall meeting is why we’ll get substandard care while at the same time paying for union members to keep their superior care even after they retire.
Sometimes it just feels good to know that you were right.
