There’s a huge controversy right now over whether we should house sex offenders from outside the county in our new jail facility. To his credit, our sheriff has done a great job of controlling what costs he can and generating additional revenue by housing prisoners from other jurisdictions, and to my knowledge we haven’t let one escape by walking out the front door. But his latest proposal is bothersome to a great many residents. The proposal is to bring sex offenders who have served their court-imposed sentences, but who have been deemed unready to return to society, into our facility until such time as, well…how long do we have to keep them? The County Commission has called for public comment on the matter although I have to wonder why it was called for election night.
But here’s what’s really bothersome to me: Why aren’t convicted drug dealers required to register? If my kid goes outside to play with the kid next door and another kid from down the block comes to play and invites them to his house for cookies and milk, I have no way of knowing who this kid’s parents are. I can go to the web site and look up sex offenders, but what about drug dealers or murderers? Does their right to privacy override my parental rights to know who my kids are playing with? Sure I could walk down the street to meet the new neighbors, but I doubt they’ll invite me in and offer me some crack cookies without knowing who I am either.
Sure, sex offenders having to register is probably a good thing but can somebody explain why the dope dealers & killers don’t have to?
